Acclimatisation
Lake Mburo & Lake Ruzongo: As part of their acclimatisation phase teams can visit some of the many lakes in south west Uganda. Here they will be able to complete a series of day walks through savannah and acacia woodland, whilst observing unique and important wetland habitats in the area.
Buwata Trail & Ruwenzori Foothills: Teams can complete the Ruwenzori foothills acclimatisation trek or complete the two day Buwata community trail. Both of these treks are based in the foothills of the Ruwenzori Mountain range and allow some challenging acclimatisation in preparation for Mt. Elgon.
Main trekking phase in Uganda
Mt. Elgon: The summit of Mt Elgon at 4321m is Uganda’s second highest mountain. The forested terrain on the slopes and open moor land provide some stunning views as you ascend. The culmination of this is the bare boulder-strewn multi-peaked crater, including the highest point, Wagagai Peak. The mountain offers an excellent challenge for those with limited mountaineering expertise.
Project
Projects in Uganda are community based and involve taking part in construction and renovation projects at a number of extremely poor primary and secondary schools in the region. Teams may, for example, help to build a classroom or help to paint or rebuild part of an existing school. Challengers may also have opportunities to teach English and play sports with the local children.
Rest and relaxation on the Uganda expedition
Rest and relaxation in Uganda tends to be spread throughout the expedition. Teams can visit Queen Elizabeth National Park where there are opportunities for game walks. Sipi Falls, located at Mount Elgon, are beautifully maintained and teams could spend a day or two camping by the waterfalls and exploring the surrounding area. They could go white water rafting at the source of the river Nile (although this would incur an additional cost) or alternatively the expedition could finish off on the beaches of Lake Victoria or one of the islands in the lake.
