Trekking in Peru

Trekking in Peru – choose your own adventure

Trekking in Peru provides challengers with the opportunity to explore forests, mountains, jungles and coast.  Peru is a challenging country offering moderate to tough treks. World Challenge runs expeditions to both in the north and the south of the country.

Peru trekking

Peru is located on the Pacific coast of South America with a terrain made up of the Amazon rainforest, the Andes mountain range and a narrow strip of coast.

The climate for trekking in Peru depends entirely on which of these environments you visit as they each have their own unique weather systems – from the humid and damp jungle interior to the plummeting temperature of the Andes.

As you are trekking in Peru you will be given a warm welcome by the indigenous population and will have endless opportunities for cultural exchange, even more so if you invest some time learning Spanish.

Trekking in Peru – options

World Challenge provides the opportunity to trek in northern or southern Peru.  Both offer many opportunities to explore the stunning landscapes and learn about Peruvian culture and heritage.

Northern Peru offers opportunities to scale snow capped mountains that look down over crystal clear lakes, to trek through remote low altitude villages or take part in jungle exploration where groups venture into the rainforest with a local guide on foot and canoe.

Southern Peru expeditions provide groups with opportunities to explore the Colca Canyon, which is twice the depth of the Grand Canyon, or the more remote Cotahuasi Canyon, which is reportedly the deepest canyon in the world.  Those looking for a greater challenge may want to attempt a volcano trek.  Your trekking in Peru experience really can be as flexible and as challenging as you like.

For those looking for culture as well as a tough but rewarding trekking in Peru  experience, teams can walk to Machu Picchu, the famous ‘Lost City of the Incas’, on a beautiful and demanding alternative to the Inca Trail.  Even further off the beaten track, there are remote ruins deep in the heart of the Sacred Valley and mountain treks in the nearby Cordillera Vilcanota.  These longer and more adventurous treks allow teams to venture into the heart of rural Peru.

Trekking in Peru – project work

After trekking in Peru you can work on valuable projects which will allow you the chance to interact and live with the locals to give you an understanding of the real Peruvian way of life.  Projects could include helping villages to construct or renovate community buildings and facilities, painting murals, establishing recycling systems or planting trees.
