Acclimatisation in Thailand
From Bangkok, teams can head to the Kaeng Krachan or Khao Yai National Parks, where huge waterfalls part the dense jungle (Hollywood film ‘The Beach’ was filmed at Khao Yai). These parks are home to a huge variety of wildlife including monkeys, wild elephants and even big cats. Alternatively teams might base themselves in Kanchanaburi, and head out to explore the spectacular Erawan Falls and the dark past of the Hellfire Pass.
Main trekking phase
The team will head for the lush jungle in the northern highlands for their main trekking phase. Possible trekking areas include the Um Phang region near Mae Sot, and the lush hills to the north-west of Chiang Rai. Most of the trekking itineraries could include an elephant ride and spending nights in remote hill-tribe villages. There are also treks through the jungle surrounding Chiang Dao, to the north of Chiang Mai.
Teams will explore the country on foot, by waterway and sometimes even by elephant! In some itineraries it may be possible to do some white-water rafting, although such options would incur an additional cost.
Project work on the Thailand expedition
There are many opportunities for different sorts of project work around Thailand, from living and working with remote hill-tribe villages in the far north, where previous teams have assisted with the construction of community buildings, to renovation work and English teaching in orphanages near the border town of Sangkhlaburi.
Rest and relaxation
Due to Thailand’s extensive coastline there is no lack of beautiful beaches and islands to relax on. Basic beach huts are available or the team may wish to simply sling their hammocks under the stars.
