Project work in Sri Lanka
The projects are likely to be based in schools either along the south coast between Galle and Tangalle or in the centre of the country around Kandy or in the hills surrounding Nuwara Eliya. The project phase will last approximately 12 days and is the main focus of the Sri Lanka expeditions. Daily activities are likely to involve some manual labour, such as creating playgrounds, painting furniture and buildings or improving basic facilities in a local school.

There will also be lots of social interaction, with work such as teaching English classes and running sporting events. The project phase offers Challengers a wonderful opportunity to make friends with the extremely welcoming local people, to learn a lot about Sri Lankan culture and to make a big difference to the community in which they are placed.

Trekking
There are limited opportunities for long treks in Sri Lanka, however there are many day walk options in the lush hill country located in central Sri Lanka. Acclimatisation walks around Nuwara Eliya and Ella enable teams to see incredible views and walk through tea plantations.

Longer treks can be achieved by climbing Sri Pada, known as Adam's Peak, the summit of which is a pilgrimage site where an imprint of what is believed to be Buddha's footprint can be seen.  Other options include trekking on Horton Plains where the breathtaking ‘World’s End’ view can be seen or venturing into the Knuckles Range of mountains.

Rest and relaxation in Sri Lanka
Depending on where teams have spent their project phase, the rest and relaxation phase may be spent along the coast enjoying some of the numerous beaches and visiting one of the turtle hatcheries.

Alternatively, teams can explore the stunning hill country with more cultural options such as visiting Kandy and the temple housing Buddha's tooth, taking a jeep safari in one of the National Parks to see the wild elephants, going white water rafting, visiting tea plantations and spice gardens or feeding baby elephants at the famous elephant orphanage at Pinnewala.
