Acclimatisation in South Africa
Teams can opt to trek in the St Lucia wetlands, retrace the steps of soldiers on famous Anglo-Zulu War battlefields, or possibly head north to Swaziland and the Malolotja Game Reserve. Teams looking for an extra challenge can even chose to adapt one of the main treks to serve as their acclimatisation phase.
Main trekking phase
KwaZulu Natal’s spectacular Drakensberg Mountains border Lesotho and offer extensive trekking. Teams would experience trails passing waterfalls, forested areas and open plateaux of mountain grassland. There are extremely challenging treks as well as easier routes available in this area. The five day Giant’s Cup trail in the southern Drakensberg or the five day Giant’s Castle trail in the central Drakensberg are possible routes.
In the Eastern Cape, teams can also tackle South Africa’s rugged Wild Coast region. Beginning in the idyllic town of Port St Johns, this trek heads south following the famous ‘Coffee Table Route’ through a spectacular landscape of deep gorges and sparkling coastline. World Challenge established this trek as a community initiative in 2008, so it directly benefits the Basotho inhabitants of the Eastern Cape.
Project work in South Africa
The project is often a central focus of an Expedition to South Africa, where there is a huge wealth divide between rich and poor. Projects in South Africa are generally community based and involve working in a local school doing some maintenance work, as well as teaching and playing sports with the local children. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in local village and community life. There may also be more remote project opportunities in Lesotho, a beautiful mountain kingdom and one of the poorest countries on earth.
Rest and relaxation
There are many opportunities to relax in and around Durban, including visiting one of the stunning beaches in the area. Teams could go on game drives in the renowned Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve, where there will be excellent chances to view the ‘African Big Five’.
