Acclimatisation phase in Russia
Horse trekking: There can be a 2 day horse trek to Mt Baida (2070m). The route is very picturesque and offers a beautiful view over several mountain lakes and high mountain ridges. The landscape in this area is different from the scenery on the way up to Mt Belukha. The team will find absolutely no one here and will get views towards the main trekking region.
Main trekking phase
The team will need to purchase some supplies for their 2 week trek, before they head deep in to the mountains and forests. Trekking will be between 5-8 hours a day, from 4 to 12 km. The start of the trek is by raft down the Katun River.
The trekking will be wild and remote. The team will cross the area of Lake Ak-Kem, resting in the heart of the Altai Mountains. Here they can find one of the most beautiful spots for trekking in the world. The mystical tranquillity and the local beauty gives rise to the numerous legends of the Altai. The Altai boasts more than 6,000 lakes and thousands of rivers, many of which the team will pass. The team will also have a chance to observe the many varieties of deer which populate Altai’s spacious valleys. Teams will be camping and spending time at altitudes over 3000m.
Climbing
When the team reach the bottom of Mt. Belukha – at the beautiful lake Ak-Kem (altitude 2000m) – they will have the option of climbing the Ak-Kem glacier up to the plateau “Tomskie Nochevski” (3400m). This is the highest point on Belukha, accessible for “beginners” in climbing.
Project work in Russia
The plan will be for teams to carry out a cultural exchange within a Summer Camp for children of the Altai region. This will be a community exchange and will be hugely beneficial for both teams: You will be involved in running activities and teaching English, and you will also have to learn to communicate in Russian! You may also get involved with a local orphanage, which will give you an insight into a very different group of people and way of life!
Rest and relaxation
Rafting: The team can do a day’s rafting on the popular river of Altai – The Katun. The Katun River is 688 km long; it starts at its headwaters, Mount Belukha glacier and runs through high mountains, taiga forest and alpine meadows covered with high grass and flowers.
Sightseeing in Moscow
The team may decide to go to the world-known and UNESCO listed Red Square and Kremlin, visit beautiful Kremlin cathedrals or just walk or take a boat trip along the Moscow River. The team could visit Park Kolomenskoye – the summer residence of the Tsars since the 16th century. In the evening the team can enjoy an amazing performance at one of the Moscow circuses.
