Learning outside

Text book learning can fade but outdoor learning experiences will stay with you forever. The things you learn will stay with you and influence the rest of your life.

Outdoor learning makes an impact

Everyone learns differently. Some people find it easy to memorise from a book, others learn from watching a documentary.  The one thing everyone has in common is that outdoor learning is the best way to create a lasting impression.

Humans are skilled a memorising facts, but learning is much more than being able to recite lists of information.  Even inspirational learning material can’t replace real life outdoor learning experiences.

Outdoor learning provides a new perspective

Travelling to new countries brings with it a whole new outdoor learning experience that provides greater appreciation of things that you may have read about many times before.

For instance you will have seen sharks on the television but until you swim with them in the ocean it’s difficult to appreciate how graceful they are.  Seeing them in the wild makes you care about their environment and what is threatening their survival.  Outdoor learning gives you a new perspective on things. Suddenly real world issues that you’ve heard about on the news become personal.

When you learn that coral is not only stunningly colourful, but it’s also vital for the inhabitants of the ocean, as well as for us as it plays such an important role in climate control, you start to wonder how it can be protected.  Outdoor learning makes climate change seem more real – it’s not just something on the television anymore. As for the coastline of the country you visit, where do you think that will be in a few decades time – under water? More and more islands are becoming threatened by rising sea levels. Travel whets your appetite and before you know it you’ll be keen to learn as much as you can about all of the things you encounter on your trip.

Think about the outdoor learning experiences of visiting a village where people have no DVD players, mobiles, broadband, games consoles or designer clothes – where work can be hard and education is limited. Or perhaps places where poverty makes life more difficult than you could ever imagine on a daily basis. Or places where electricity is only available between certain hours, or maybe not at all.

There are so many things we take for granted. Outdoor learning makes us stop and take notice.

Outdoor learning is a different kind of educational experience

From scenery, to weather, from wildlife to human nature – everything you see while on an outdoor learning expedition will inspire deeper learning. And the best thing is that it won’t feel like work. Outdoor learning is a million miles away from learning in a classroom.
