Tips for using the internet safely

The internet has changed the way that young people learn and socialise. It’s a fantastic homework resource but it's easy to forget that it can also be a dangerous place. By equipping yourself with some useful information and basic guidelines you can help to make your time on the internet as safe as possible.

Basic internet guidelines

  • Use control options from your internet service provider (ISP) to block certain material from coming into your computer. You can also get software that blocks access to certain sites, restricts personal information from being sent online and monitors online activity.

  • Find out what online protection is offered wherever you use a computer. This could include school, after school clubs, youth clubs or friend’s houses.

  • Chatrooms are great places to socialise but be aware that some people taking part may not be who they say they are.

  • Never send personal photographs over the internet

  • Never reveal personal information, such as address, phone number, or school name, birthday or location to anyone, even another child

  • Use only a screen name

  • Never agree to meet anyone from a chat room in person and if anyone asks them to meet they should inform an adult immediately

  • Never respond to a threatening email or message
