World Challenge, HTI and ASDAN
A letter from Cat Mangham, Headteacher - Fairfield High School and previously Headteacher - Wootton Bassett School about the partnership World Challenge has formed with ASDAN and Hti to support schools and youth development.Capture the experience
“The issues facing 14-19 year olds in our society are more complex than ever before. How can you inspire the young people you work with to attain the knowledge and skills they and the economy need to prosper?
ASDAN, Hti and World Challenge are combining forces to help education face these challenges and support schools in meeting them.
Whilst at Wootton Bassett I worked with all of these organisations for some years to ensure we improve the life skills of the young people we work with. Through the work they promote in our school they have proven to make a difference to the students CVs, university applications and in becoming independent, responsible citizens.
These organisations have helped provide real education for the real world complimenting our curriculum without additional burden on our staff.
Wootton Bassett have been running the developmental expeditions with World Challenge for many years now with our students raising money, planning and leading expeditions and completing project work in Bolivia, India, Vietnam and South Africa
Through a unique partnership with ASDAN those expeditions can now earn students 70 UCAS points with World Challenge as the registered centre responsible for all the guidance and moderation. Once we completed our expedition we then applied to Hti to be a Go4it school and gain its national award. The award recognises schools that develop a progressive culture of creativity, innovation and adventure for learning, underpinned by a positive attitude towards risk.
Taking part in World Challenge and running ASDAN courses and qualifications has meant that achieving the Go4it award was a natural progression for our school. This July we received our prestigious award which now has pride of place in our reception. Achieving Go4it status provides the school with a national quality standard. It has helped raise the school profile amongst parents, the Local Authority, Ofsted, local employers, sponsors and the wider local community.
Within in my new school we are using the go4it principles as the starting point for improving the school and we have placed ASDAN firmly in the curriculum and will be working with World Challenge at KS3 next year.”
