Educational value of World Challenge expeditions

The educational value of expeditions

The UK’s key employers voted World Challenge by name as one of the most important activities undertaken at school, above activities such as Young Enterprise and sporting events.

These organisations rated leadership, teamwork, self-motivation, communication, confidence, consideration of others and the ability to learn as being the key determinants in the selection of employees; all of which are life skills developed and learnt on a World Challenge expedition. This independent study was carried out by the United Learning Trust in association with Ratcliff Hall Ltd.

Life skills for the real world

  • The expedition programme also contributes towards the UK Government’s ’Every Child Matters’ and ‘A Curriculum for Excellence’ agendas and can be built in to students’ personal development framework.
  • It also looks great on personal statements for university/UCAS applications and provides a great point of discussion at the interview stage. It makes students stand out from the crowd and most find that adapting to university life is much easier.

Life is an incredible journey...
Students who participate in a World Challenge expedition will embark on an amazing journey of self-discovery.  The life skills they learn will not only aid personal growth, but can help secure university places and impress future employers. Our rigorous and inspirational expeditions allow participants to build strong friendships and gain confidence.

Curriculum reforms
An expedition and the build-up programme can work side-by-side with the aims of the curriculum and the framework of personal learning and thinking skills. It enables all students to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.

ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) – Level 3

  • CoPE Level 3 is awarded 70 UCAS points or equivalent to an AS Level grade A/Higher leaving certificate
  • The expedition programme provides plenty of opportunities for Challengers to successfully fulfil the portfolio to the moderated standard
  • World Challenge advises the team on what to put in their portfolio provides access to the relevant information online and also helps moderate portfolios (taking the burden away from teachers).

ASDAN Universities Award (UA)

  • Due to the nature of a World Challenge programme, every Challenger participating on an expedition programme automatically gains the ASDAN Universities Award
  • A number of universities give direct credit for this award in terms of the points offer made to candidates
  • Those that develop the skills of leadership and teamwork will be more employable and will have a greater potential to add value to a company

The International Baccalaureate (IB)

  • World Challenge provides school programmes that complement and enhance existing curriculum whilst providing exciting opportunities for students and staff
  • An overseas expedition programme lasting 2 weeks or more dovetails neatly with the ethos of the IB and offers students a springboard for fulfilling the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) and Extended Essay elements of the IB diploma
