Acclimatisation in Chile
There are several day treks near La Paz and around Lake Titicaca which enable the team to acclimatise properly before commencing the main trekking phase. Alternatively teams can head to Elqui Valley - the home of the pisco grape - where there are a range of day and overnight treks.
The trekking possibilities in Bolivia & Chile are unrivalled in South America. Teams may choose to complete a high altitude trek traversing great ranges or to walk along one of the old Inca Trails. They may decide to tackle a trek that starts off in the high Altiplano before dropping down into the fertile valleys of the Yungas. Alernatively teams can head to San Pedro de Atacama, perching on the edge of the Atacama desert, trek through the salt flats, set up a base camp and climb Volcan Lascar. Teams also have the opportunity to head right up north into the remote Lauca National Park to complete a series of high altitude treks taking in the altiplano, shimmering lakes and thermal springs and culminating in an attempt of a summit.
Project phase
Projects offer teams a precious insight into young and vulnerable communities in Bolivia and Chile. This could incvolve undertaking basic construction work in orphanages and street children centres in and around La Paz, working in a Chilean school or participating in recycling and environmental awareness initiatives. Either way, the porject phase is a chance to really scratch the suface and immerse yourself in the local culture.
Rest and relaxation phase
After a fairly exhausting itinerary there are a number of options for a period of rest and relaxation and a chance to see some of Bolivia’s more unusual sights. From Lake Titicaca, which is the highest navigable lake in the world, you can explore the Island of the Sun, which is where the Incas believe their empire originated. In the south, a tour of the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, is an amazing and eerie experience. In Chile, La Serena and Iquique offer cobbled streets, Spanish colonial plazas, crumbling architecture and their location right on the coast mean the beach is never far away. San Pedro de Atacama is a popular hub for activities like sandboarding, visiting the El Tatio Geysers (natural hot springs which shoot out of the ground), thermal baths, star-gazing observatories, sunset trips to the Valle de Luna and tours of the salt plains to name but a few!
