International Expedition Leaders

World Challenge has opportunities for Expedition Leaders to lead expeditions for schools based in Australia, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, the United States and South Africa.

International Expedition Leaders Requirements

Each application will be reviewed on the applicant’s personal merits and experience, but for an outline of what we are looking for please see below.

Expedition Leader requirements: Experience of working with young people in an educational environment Wilderness/Remote Area First Aid Qualification or equivalent Developing world travel or work experience Appropriate technical qualifications as below:

UK Qualification

• Walking Group Leader - Recommended to obtain from Mountain Leader Training Board
• Mountain Leader Summer - Recommended to obtain from Mountain Leader Training Board

Australia Qualification

Certificate IV - Outdoor Recreation (with Bushwalking Component) - Recommended to obtain from TAFE College
Degree or Post Graduate Degree – Outdoor Education - Recommended to obtain from University
NOLRS Bushwalking Registration - Recommended to obtain from NOLRS (National Outdoor Leader Registration Scheme)
BMLC - Recommended to obtain from Bushwalking & Mountain Craft Leadership Certificate

New Zealand Qualification

• Bushcraft Instructor - Recommended to obtain from New Zealand Outdoor Instructors Association 
• Alpine 1 & 2 - Recommended to obtain from New Zealand Mountain Safety Council

South Africa Qualification

Advanced Mountain Walking Leader Course

USA and Canada Qualification

• NOLS and / IWLS - Recommended to have certifications for technical outdoor leadership schools. Jungle and altitude experience is a plus.

In exceptional circumstances individuals with strong proven experience in all of the following competencies will be considered:

• Leadership and group management
• Risk and crisis management
• Responsibilities of leading an expedition
• Clothing and equipment
• Camp craft

Please note all of World Challenge Expedition Leaders must attend a Potential Leader Training and Assessment Course in the country of the home nation of the team for their first expedition. For more details on the courses please visit the relevant web pages.
